What is true independence? It is the freedom to be who we really are; recognizing that, and then expressing it.
What then and who are we independent from? I think it’s being able to be present to this moment without the override of the false self. The greatest independence is to separate who we think we are from what we actually can see is going on at any moment. In an ironic way, we get closer to what’s going on when we step away from seeing our identity within the current reality that’s here.
All of us to some degree operate from a sense of a little secret petty self that asserts that something is wrong with us beneath everything we do. As we look back on our lives we can see moments that didn’t go well and when we made up what we think it said about ourselves. Our observations escalated into facts. We became certain that we weren’t adequate because of something which happened. We weren’t able to untangle our identity at that time from the failure. From this place, we inserted ideals on us to live up to, as a means to offset our shame. We guard this secret self in forms of manipulating others’ perceptions toward us.
From this secret spot, fear rises, putting our mask on to avoid humiliation. Our vulnerability is put away, giving rise to a closing of the heart. Cynicism is built on disconnection; it is the voice of the defended heart. Our judgment fogs up our ability to see ourselves or others in a full way. Instead our stories and biases reinforce our certainties. All the while we lose our ability to be present to what is here.
We seek independence of the differences others have compared to us. We turn away to swim in the inner enemies—the voice of fear, cynicism, and judgment, rather than deepening our attention to what’s here. A background hum distracts us away from leaning toward what’s going on now. Taking that background hum away like being on an airplane suddenly with no amenities. We’d go nuts, sadly enough with nothing to entertain us.
The past contaminates and pollutes us with memory; concepts of reality from which our stories lie to us. It casts it’s shadow on the now, instead of the future. Everything the future needs is given to us in this moment, but we can’t even catch the shaft of light coming from there.
We see the enemy (thought), and the enemy is ourselves. We repel the current conditions without any way into understanding how we invited them. Our own stuckness is like being prisoner of our own machine.
Our souls are betrayed by a rational mind convincing us that what it computes is right. When we edit reality this way, the capacity for change short circuits. We’d prefer everything to look the same again, and again, and again instead of shutting off, living forward into the mystery with a fresher mind with repetitive beginnings.
Independence is to know our habitual ways of seeing and be an observer instead. This requires a capacity of “suspending.” We must see independent of our seeing. Without this, soul recognition goes unnoticed. The “active button” to create is disabled.
To love is to see; to see purely the unobstructed truth. To sense what’s here from our heart requires independence of our cynicism. To presence what the future wants to come into reality, requires standing into this moment with a relaxed attentiveness.
As we look at this form of independence we begin to see the way to freedom from all these is a newer capacity to listen. Not the listening from our habitual thinking but the listening from the organs (heart; soul) which give rise to attention as if we’re standing in a different place in the room. The wiser listener looks more deeper for what is going on. His willingness and alacrity have his deepest intentions at the center of his awareness.
Independence is the availability to the present. It is the willingness to operate from the nature of who we are.
On this Independence day, the greatest gift is to let go. To step into knowing what is here and staying with it. To be present to what’s here as if we’ve invited it.
To be independent of the small voice that says “run away.” Don’t run. Don’t hide. Just accept that whatever is going on is the future casting it’s shadow on the present. In the silence and space is a larger self. But you forget it too often with smaller, non-essential stuff.
Here’s how to stay with it:
It’s not about ME. Let go of any thoughts you have about it being about you, how you’re affected, being wronged, what you think of you at the base of that—“identity”. Stop the pre-emptive strike of not being a sucker.
It’s not about THEM. Let go of what you think they’re thinking about you. What they’re all about. It’s not about what you think of them.
It’s not about the PAST. The past is history. Let it go. Get here.
It’s not about the FUTURE. Stop your stories and expectations you project on the future. You worry about what has to happen, supposed to happen. Just enter the moment with a capacity for being without anticipation. Just being full alive in the present. It is the only time you have any control over.
NOW. This is the vastness, the emptiness, the domain of hereness and nowness. It is the place where the future presences itself. It is independent of a fixed future. Independent of concepts or belief inserted over it. It is the clue, crack, spark, and signal to the soul’s true work and highest future possibility. The sacred project that’s been there all along is revealed. Just go there.
