Most entrepreneurs today aren't rewarded for their neverending list of hard work. They all go to the same school---the school of checks. With each new check, over time things get very complicated, and they're bogged down in to much stuff, doing activities they weren't made for. They get locked in at a certain size, inhibited by too many demands on their attention. They become so caught up, they're like prisoners of their own machine on a treadmill to no end. The pattern neutralizes them like a riptide pulling them downward. Freedom becomes interference and then the confidence is blown, doubt takes over. They stop putting their attention on a bigger future, in fact just when their best opportunities land right in their path, they can't reach them, because this monster has them sucked right back down again into long hours and fatigue. Rather than serving their lives, their business consumes them.

Until one day the whole run and excitement of being an entrepreneur fades away. Either they can't get to anything important or just the opposite---so much thrill all at once, leaves them no time to think or plan. So it's often not the problem itself, but the inability to even think about the problem that is the limit we can free up.

This whole phenomenon is what we call the plateau of progress, and there's several stages that get more and more difficult. Stage 1: The War on Stuff. Work becomes so incessantly frenetic, that in a strange way, they're too busy being busy to do something that would make them a lot less busy. Stage Three: The Confusion Lapse, with learning comes too great a cost and Stage 4: The Commoditization Trap ---the competition is doing it for less and less, forcing them into a dangerous domain of rising hard work with smaller margins left over.
